What is Orton-Gillingham Tutoring?
Orton-Gillingham tutoring is for students who are struggling with reading and/or spelling and need individualized instruction to improve areas such as phonemic awareness, reading fluency, reading comprehension, and spelling.

The Orton-Gillingham approach is an explicit, systematic, and multisensory approach to reading and spelling. It is an effective approach to teaching all students to read, including those with Dyslexia, ADHD, and Autism.
Orton-Gillingham Tutoring Sessions
I use IMSE's OG+ and Morphology+ curriculum for tutoring, adjusting focus and time spent on each component depending on student need.
With IMSE OG+ curriculum, we work on the following:
-
Phonemic Awareness: Students work on blending and segmenting sounds in spoken language.
-
Word Chaining: This is a type of word manipulation where students change one sound to spell a new word.
-
Cumulative Review: We focus on reviewing learned concepts with a visual drill, auditory/kinesthetic drill, and blending drill.
-
Teaching a New Phonics Concept: Students will learn corresponding sounds to the letters of the alphabet, blends, digraphs, vowel sounds, and more. Additionally, students will learn rules for spelling.
-
Sight Words: Students will learn sight words by discussing irregular spelling patterns and etymology. Continued practice with reading and spelling is woven in throughout each session.
-
Spelling: Students will practice spelling by thinking about the sounds and rules they've learned and applying to individual words and sentences.
-
Reading Fluency: Students will practice fluency by working on their speed, accuracy, and prosody, using fluency pyramids, reading phrases, and automatic word recognition activities.
-
Reading Comprehension: Students will work on comprehension by building vocabulary knowledge and answering questions following multiple read throughs of a passage or decodable text.

With IMSE Morphology+ curriculum, we work on the following:
-
Cumulative Review: Students will review all previously learned affixes, Latin roots, and/or Greek roots.
-
Teaching a New Morphology Concept: Students will learn new morphemes (affixes, Latin roots, and/or Greek roots), their meanings, and how they change the meaning of a word.
-
Spelling: Students apply their morpheme knowledge to spelling complex words and sentences.
-
Reading Fluency: Students apply their knowledge and read a passage containing the new morpheme taught.
-
Comprehension: Students develop comprehension skills through explicit vocabulary instruction and applying morpheme knowledge to make meaning of what they read. Students will answer comprehension questions after reading connected texts.
