What is EBLI?

EBLI stands for Evidence-Based Literacy Instruction. It is a speech-to-print or Structured Linguistic Literacy approach to reading and spelling. Students become aware of sounds in spoken language and are explicitly taught to map letters to these sounds. EBLI incorporates interleaved practice, so students are exposed to the same spelling patterns multiple times.

EBLI is ideal for students with a large gap in reading and spelling skills. It moves through phonics concepts quickly in order to close as fast as possible. This makes it an effective approach for students with suspected or diagnosed Dyslexia, ADHD, and Autism.

EBLI Sessions

EBLI sessions cycle through multiple activities that develop all reading and writing skills: phonemic awareness, phonics, reading fluency, vocabulary development, reading and listening comprehension, spelling, handwriting, and sentence/paragraph writing. EBLI does not focus on mastery of concepts before moving on but focuses on interleaved practice, a learning strategy that mixes and alternates previously learned concepts into session activities. Interleaved practice has been shown to improve long-term retention of concepts.
