Orton-Gillingham Tutoring
Orton-Gillingham tutoring is for students 5-12 years old who are struggling with reading and/or spelling and need individualized instruction to improve areas such as phonemic awareness, reading fluency, reading comprehension, and spelling.

The Orton-Gillingham approach is an explicit, systematic, and multisensory approach to reading and spelling. It is an effective approach to teaching all students to read, including those with Dyslexia, ADHD, and Autism.

Lessons are structured and follow a similar routine, with customized lesson planning for each child. Lessons cycle through 6 main components:
-
Phonemic Awareness: The ability to identify and manipulate sounds in spoken language.
-
Phonics Concept: Students will learn corresponding sounds to the letters of the alphabet, blends, digraphs, vowel sounds, and more. Additionally, students will learn rules for spelling.
-
Sight Words: Students will learn sight words by discussing irregular spelling patterns and etymology.
-
Spelling: Students will practice spelling by thinking about the sounds and rules they've learned and applying to individual words and sentences.
-
Reading Fluency: Students will practice fluency by working on their speed, accuracy, and prosody, using fluency pyramids, reading phrases, and automatic word recognition activities.
-
Reading Comprehension: Students will work on comprehension by building vocabulary knowledge and answering questions following multiple read throughs of a passage or decodable text.

Early Literacy Tutoring
This is for young students (3.5-5 years) looking to develop early literacy skills, including oral language skills. Students will work on phonological awareness, vocabulary development, and listening comprehension, in addition to basic phonics instruction.

The biggest predictor of future reading and writing success is a child's early oral language skills. By working on oral language skills, your child is building the foundation for reading and writing in school.
Weekly lessons will include:
-
Phonological Awareness: Students will work on various phonological awareness skills, with an emphasis on rhyming, syllable segmentation, and initial sound identification.
-
Vocabulary Development: Students will receive explicit vocabulary instruction connected to a themed text for the week. Students will learn 2-4 new vocabulary words per week.
-
Interactive Read Aloud: Students will improve listening comprehension via an interactive story. As we read a book, I will model how to think about the text critically, to develop comprehension skills such as prediction, inferencing, and understanding main idea. Students are also exposed to key story details such as characters, setting, problem, and resolution.
-
Phonics Instruction: Students will learn all the letters of the alphabet and their corresponding sounds.
-
Speaking and Communication: Students will have practice speaking in complete sentences throughout each lesson, with a focus on correct grammar and syntax.

Reading Fundamentals Tutoring
This is for young students 4-6 years old who want to learn to read before starting school. Students will learn to read and spell using the Orton-Gillingham approach. Students in this group must be able to speak in complete sentences and follow 2-step directions.

Orton-Gillingham is an explicit, systematic, multisensory approach to teaching reading. All students, regardless of ability, benefit from this type of instruction.
